  • Travelocity Thanksgiving travel: While consumers will enjoy hotel deals over Thanksgiving weekend, cheap flights will be harder to find.

With Thanksgiving – one of the busiest domestic travel periods of the year – less than two months away, Travelocity travel experts analyzed airfare and hotel booking data to offer consumers an early glimpse into travel prices for the Thanksgiving holiday. The news is mixed: While consumers will enjoy hotel deals over Thanksgiving weekend, cheap flights will be harder to find.

“Booking now will also yield a more reasonable price, not to mention more choices, than waiting until the last minute.”

Average domestic airfare over Thanksgiving is $376 (inclusive of tax), about four percent higher compared to Thanksgiving 2010. Domestic hotel rates average $114 per night (inclusive of tax), a four percent decrease year-over-year.

Domestic fares out of the top 10 origination cities are mixed, ranging from a decline of eight percent (Dallas / Fort Worth) to an eight percent increase (Seattle).

Origination City       Avg. Domestic Fare       YoY Price Change
    New York City       $366       +5%
    Denver       $327       -4%
    Washington, DC       $363       +6%
    Los Angeles       $438       +3%
    Chicago       $350       -5%
    San Francisco       $460       +3%
    Dallas / Fort Worth       $335       -8%
    Boston       $374       flat
    South Florida       $299       flat
    Seattle       $423       +8%

“When it comes to a peak travel period like Thanksgiving, knowledge is power. Just knowing what the going rate is out of your city can be tremendously helpful in knowing whether or not a fare is worth pulling the trigger on,” said Genevieve Shaw Brown, Travelocity editorial director. “Booking now will also yield a more reasonable price, not to mention more choices, than waiting until the last minute.”
