10-Story-High Ribbon Marks City in Pink Campaign(R) for Breast Cancer Awareness
NEW YORK, Sep 8, 2003 The Westin New York at Times Square will sport the first-ever pink ribbon to grace the NYC skyline this week in support of the annual City in Pink(R) lighting campaign, which coincides with the Greater New York City Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Race for the Cure(R). The 10-story-high ribbon, which was created by Cappelli Erectors, Inc., will be in place from September 8 through 14 and is visible from many vantage points throughout the city.
The consultant who "wraps" the Cartier building every holiday season attached the 60-foot-tall ribbon to the south facade of the 45-story building, which faces 42nd Street at 8th Avenue. The Race for the Cure(R) takes place on Sunday, September 14 at 8:45am in Central Park.
"Given the fact that breast cancer strikes 1 out of 9 women in America and 1 out of 8 in the Northeast, we are committed to raising awareness for this cause," said Sue Brush, senior vice president of Westin Hotels & Resorts, who was recently diagnosed and is being treated for breast cancer. Brush will walk in the Race for the Cure(R) with her Westin Hotel brand teammates.
"City in Pink is a very special way to remind people of the ongoing fight against breast cancer," said John Sweeney, general manager of the hotel.
"Having a giant pink ribbon erected on top of the most talked about buildings in the city is a marvelous way to remind women of the importance of breast health," said Lydia Ruth, director of public relations for the Empire State Building.
Since 1990, various buildings across the city have shown their commitment to breast cancer awareness by illuminating themselves with pink lights during Race weekend. The result is a touching tribute to breast cancer survivors and victims, and to the hope that research can eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening illness.
