HOUSTON (January 31, 2002) -- Approximately 20 months and $285 million from now, the city of Houston will finally have a true downtown convention center hotel to call its own. With Houston's largest ballroom and hotel meeting space, 1,200 guest rooms, and the most modern hotel services available, the Hilton Americas-Houston will open its doors in the Fall of 2003 to some of the most prestigious meetings and conventions at this ideal, year-round destination.
Meeting planners already have begun to express great interest and have booked advance meetings and conventions at the property through Janice O'Neill-Cox and her team at the Hilton Americas-Houston Pre-Opening Sales Office. The buzz began even at the hotel's groundbreaking ceremony last summer and has continued ever since. Organizations that already have selected the Hilton Houston-Americas as their host conference hotel include Oildom Publishing (January 2004), Airports Council International (September 2004) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (May 2005).
“The Hilton name has a longstanding reputation for providing some of the best hotel convention facilities in the world's international gateway cities, expressed Janice O’Neill-Cox, director of sales and marketing for the hotel. Less than a three-hour flight from all major U.S. cities and five hours from most North American and Latin American cities, the Hilton Americas-Houston has been developed and designed for the most discriminating business and convention traveler. By blending a perfect combination of cosmopolitan design and comfortable rooms with all of the right amenities and services, the Hilton Americas-Houston will fast become a landmark in downtown Houston.
The Hilton Houston-America's 93,000 square feet of flexible, high-tech meeting space are of special interest to meeting planners. The hotel's 40,000-square-foot main ballroom, an additional 26,000-square-foot junior ballroom and 30 meeting rooms, provide groups with a variety of flexible options for the most intimate of meetings to the most expansive of events. Both ballrooms will feature special event technology walls, with built-in 9' x12' presentation screens in each section and professional show power lighting and audio connections controlled by LCD panels. All meeting rooms will feature in-room Ethernet connections for high-speed Internet access and motorized 6' x 8' presentation screens.
The hotel's direct skywalk connection to the newly expanded George R. Brown Convention Center, also gives convention attendees easy access to hotel and convention center facilities. Of course, the hotel’s 1,600-car garage also will make parking easy and convenient for guests.
The Hilton Americas-Houston's portfolio of 1,200 rooms will include two Presidential Suites, two Executive Suites and 62 one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites. Each guestroom will include a hair dryer, iron and ironing board, radio/alarm clock, mini bar, coffee maker, in-room safe, oversized desk, dual line telephone with data port and a high-speed Internet connection.
The Hilton Americas - Houston will have two restaurants on the lobby level and an express coffee bar/café for quick bites. The expansive lobby lounge will be the perfect spot for guests to unwind after a busy day and an intimate formal restaurant located on the 24th floor will offer a view of Houston’s glittering skyline.
To round out the offerings, the hotel will feature a luxurious day spa; an outdoor, heated lap pool; a whirlpool; and a full-service fitness center with the latest in cardiovascular and weight training equipment.
“This hotel is being carefully constructed to showcase the very best the hospitality industry can offer its guests,” O’Neill-Cox added.
The Houston Convention Center Hotel Corporation, a corporation formed by the city of Houston to develop the project, has signed a 15-year agreement with Hilton Hotels Corporation to operate and manage this new hotel.
The opening of the Hilton Americas will be the start of another chapter in the company’s long history in Houston. One of its best-known properties was the historic Shamrock Hotel, operated by Hilton from 1954 until 1986. The hotel, demolished in 1987 after Hilton sold the property, was a beloved symbol of Houston’s freewheeling, entrepreneurial spirit. Houston is also known for its Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. The college was established in 1969 to educate students about careers in the hospitality and restaurant industries.
Hilton Hotels Corporation owns, manages and franchises some of the most-renowned convention hotels to be found anywhere, such as New York's Waldorf=Astoria®, the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa, the Hilton San Francisco and Chicago's Palmer House Hilton.
